AmeriCorps Environmental Educator Positions
The Maine Conservation Corps (MCC) is accepting applications for AmeriCorps Environmental Educator positions located throughout Maine for 2008-2009. MCC is dedicated to environmental education, outdoor recreation and conservation projects, volunteer opportunities, and developing career and leadership skills.
Qualifications include a 4-year degree or equivalent experience, good organizational skills, initiative, good communication, writing and public speaking skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team, computer skills, a valid Driver’s license, and a commitment to environmental issues and community service.
1700 hour positions receive a living allowance of $11,400 ($253.50/week for 45 weeks) and if eligible, an AmeriCorps education award of $4,725.00 upon successful completion of the program.
900 hour positions receive a living allowance of $6,035 ($253.50/week for 24 weeks) and if eligible, an AmeriCorps education award of $2,362.50 upon successful completion of the program.
Other benefits include health insurance, childcare reimbursement if eligible, experiential learning, a wide range of training and networking opportunities and a Maine State Park Pass.

Bureau of Parks and Lands, Greenville
PENDING FUNDING This is a Pilot Project for Regional Interpretive Programming on State Lands. The MCC Environmental Educator will be responsible for working with Bureau staff and area organizations to select interpretive themes, develop program materials, determine appropriate sites, schedule and deliver the programs and evaluate the project for use in other areas.

This MCC AmeriCorps Environmental Educator will bring natural and cultural resource interpretation to underserved regions and state lands. You will be developing and delivering programs on a regional basis that will serve at multiple sites. The focus will be efficient use of resources in delivering visitor services as you support regional efforts to expand nature-based tourism by integrating programs with local efforts and venues.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATOR - 1700 hours January – November
Chewonki Foundation, Wiscasset
The Chewonki positions are unlike any other AmeriCorps positions with MCC. They require long hours with youth in the “outdoor classroom”. This program is a unique model in which an Environmental Educator lives with a school chaperone and 10 students in a small shore-side campsite on Chewonki Neck during the spring and summer months (rain or shine). You will be one of four MCC Environmental Educators teaching group challenges, natural history, organic farming and renewable energy at Chewonki's Center for Environmental Education. This is a residential program that provides housing and meals in exchange for long hours and a full time commitment to Chewonki. Winter projects are varied and include physical labor such as maintenance, construction and restoration at the Chewonki campus.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATOR – 900 hours May – November
Lower Kennebec Regional Land Trust (LKRLT), Bath
PENDING FUNDING LKRLT is developing a Regional Stewardship Volunteer Program (RSVP) to support responsible stewardship of protected lands while creating a “whole estuary constituency” that reconnects people to their sense of place. The RSVP will improve the quality and consistency of stewardship practices for each of LKRLT’s fee properties. The MCC Environmental Educator will be assisting in the launch of the RSVP project during the 2009 stewardship season. “ground truthing” stewardship projects; coordinating stewardship community events; alongside volunteers, performing event oversight and manual labor using hand/power tools during work days; assisting the Development and Outreach Coordinator with volunteer communications and end of season celebration; assisting LKRLT Stewardship Committee with conservation easement monitoring; performing data entry to document volunteer hours and activities; and other office and field work as assigned.
Typical tasks within the project include:

LKLRT will establish the program on its own conserved properties (fee lands and conservation easements) and work toward offering stewardship services to all conservation landowners in the Kennebec Estuary Region.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATOR – 1700 hours January – November
Merryspring Nature Center, Camden
This Environmental Educator will employ his/her knowledge, skill and experience to provide professional coordination of the education program of Merryspring Nature Center. The work covers a broad range of activities including planning, program development, scheduling, teaching, writing, materials management, grant writing, budgeting, record keeping, and interaction with the public.
Typical tasks within the project include:
- Work with the supervisor or Education Committee Chair to develop long-range goals for the various components of MNC educational outreach: programs, publications, collections and merchandise
- Work with the supervisor or Education Committee Chair and Treasurer to develop long-range educational capital budgets addressing spatial, equipment, and materials needs
- Work with the supervisor or Education Committee Chair to develop long-range educational funding sources
- Work with the supervisor or Education Committee Chair to create an annual educational schedule far enough in advance so that the Administrative Manager can mail and post events in a timely fashion and avoid scheduling conflicts
- Develop and implement year-round, age-appropriate educational programming for children and school visits
- Develop and implement weekly educational programs, lecture series, classes and workshops of interest to adults
- Make necessary arrangements for guest lecturers
- Provide the Administrative Manager with the necessary descriptive text for press releases and informational membership mailings
- Enlist volunteers to set up the lecture/workshop/classroom space, provide refreshments, collect fees, and clean up at educational events
Desired skills, experience, and qualities:
- A minimum of a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science Degree or experience commensurate with the needs of the position. A degree in natural sciences is preferred
- Compliance with State of Maine statutes applicable to persons working with children
- (A license for the collection of wildlife specimens)
- A valid driver’s license and use of a motor vehicle with evidence of insurability
- A working knowledge of the MNC mission and an interest in the success of MNC in meeting its goals
- A strong working knowledge of and interest in horticulture, forestry, natural history, ecology, and conservation and the ability and initiative to research and learn about new areas
- Organizational skills for creating program and event schedules and budgets
- Supervisory abilities for managing volunteers
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for writing educational pieces and teaching
- A strong commitment to communicating the MNC mission and the knowledge of horticulture, forestry, and natural history to both adults and children
- Interpersonal skills of tact, patience, diplomacy, flexibility, humor and a pleasant manner for interacting with the public (including children), the Board, and other staff, and the ability to adjust to changes in scheduling and priorities

Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve, Wells
As the MCC AmeriCorps Environmental Educator in this position, you will be involved in two initiatives integrating stewardship, education, and research at the Wells Reserve.
“Protecting Our Children’s Water” brings together town staff, municipal board members, conservation commissioners, water district staff, community groups, and others interested in addressing issues surrounding water supply and quality using social marketing strategies and ecosystem based management tools. Local Workgroups are formed to prioritize and act upon key issues affecting their watershed based on their interests, positions, and expertise.
“Seacoast Watershed Information Manager” You will work as part of a team to maintain, update, and expand this web based resource. (swim.wellsreserve.org) is a website that provides the tools and information needed by coastal decision-makers to guide sustainable management of their community’s water resources. The site offers watershed- and town-specific information to help 34 communities accomplish their watershed conservation work more efficiently. The SWIM website features primers on watershed issues, a database of key materials (e.g., publications, websites, maps, reports, etc), mapping options, a full-featured events calendar, and an integrated web-based community forum.

AmeriCorps Service Position Description

Position: Volunteer and Marketing Leader - 1700 hours – November 08 – September 09
Maine Conservation Corps, AmeriCorps Program
Position Summary:
The MCC Volunteer and Marketing Leader position provides coordination and leadership to MCC teams and Environmental Educators to involve volunteers in projects that accomplish significant conservation, education, and outdoor recreation service projects. Members serve Maine’s communities, participate in the AmeriCorps national service program, receive volunteer management training, and gain hands-on experience. The MCC program is dedicated to accomplishing outdoor recreation and conservation projects for the public, promoting and managing volunteer opportunities, providing conservation education, and building self-esteem and leadership, and raising the aspirations of members and volunteers.
Volunteer service projects include work with Field Teams consisting of 2 to 6 members and 1 or 2 Team Leaders. They may include residential, and sometimes backcountry sites. Volunteer service projects also include work with Environmental Educators at MCC Host Sites.
The MCC Volunteer and Marketing Leader position will also serve as marketing coordinator for MCC.
Supervision Received:
The Volunteer and Marketing Leader serves under the supervision of the MCC Program Coordinator.
Specific Duties:
- Coordinate volunteer events and individual volunteer experiences.
- Research marketing and promotional strategies, design marketing plan and work with MCC staff to implement branding options.
- Identify target populations/areas for the focus of public information and education, public relations and marketing efforts for a specific public programs or entities.
- Select mediums and media to publicize available services and features of program.
- Design, write and implement promotional strategies such as Press Releases, public service announcements, advertising copy, design print/promotional materials and posters.
- Plan, coordinate and participate in promotional activities, public education and information efforts to increase awareness and understanding of program services and activities. Write and deliver speeches to civic and service organizations.
Qualifications:
- Interest in serving, and willingness to commit to a full term of service.
- 18 years of age or older.
- A U.S. citizen, or U.S. national, or a lawful permanent resident alien of the U.S.
- Demonstrated leadership ability and a commitment to improve those skills.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- High school diploma or GED, with preference for a college degree OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
- 1 or 2 season’s previous experience with AmeriCorps or trail work.
- Being flexible and serve on a schedule including:
· 5 days on (which may include Holidays), 2 days off
· Some additional weekend service hours
Benefits: $400 -$450 per week – dependent on qualifications and experience.
