Welcome to the Maine Bureau of Parks
& Lands
If you want to explore Maine's great outdoors, you've come to
the right place! Maine is legendary for its rock bound coast, the
north woods, mountains, lakes, and rivers. All of these areas are
represented in the one million acres managed by the Bureau of Parks
& Lands.
FIREWOOD PROGRAM
The Maine Department of Conservation’s Bureau of Parks and Lands has for the past several years run a program to allow the public to cut firewood on the State’s Public Lands for a fee. Under this program individuals can cut up to 10 cords of firewood per year for their own use.
The program requires that individuals have their own chainsaws and means of transporting the firewood cut, typically a pick-up truck. Wood is sold “on the stump” requiring the individual to fell, limb, cut up, and move the wood from the stump to the road.
Wood is sold by the cord at $25 per cord through permits obtained at one of the three Public Lands Regional Offices in Farmington, Old Town and Ashland.
Wood must be marked and cut in areas designated by the Public Lands Foresters.
Designated areas for this program are generally within 100 to 200 feet of existing woods roads on Public Lands. All wood cutting permits and practices comply with the Bureau’s sustainability and forest certification standards.
Firewood sold under this program is subject to availability of wood near roadways and staff resources to mark the wood.
Due to the overwhelming interest in this program we do not have sufficient firewood marked for cutting at this time. We are working hard to develop more marked wood for this program.
Anyone interested in cutting firewood under this program should contact a Public Lands Regional Office. In order to provide good service because Regional Staff are often in the field, please leave a message with your name address and phone number, requests will be answered in the order received.
Regional Office Phone Numbers:
Ashland- 435-7963
Farmington -778-8231
Old Town - 827-1818
To date, the Bureau has sold more than four times the number of permits sold at this time last year.
